The poem is addressed to Wordsworth's younger sister, Dorothy Wordsworth. He urged her to come out into the open lap of nature. She can learn more from nature then from her books. So she should put on her woodland dress and spend the day among trees. She should come out to enjoy the beauties of nature for a day. She should bring no book with her because the day is to be spent in idleness.
It is the 1st mild day in the month of March. Every minute is full of sweetness and beauty. The readbreast is the song bird which sings sweet songs form the tall evergreen larch tree. The tree stands beside the door of the poet's house. The whole atmosphere is full of happiness. There is a blessing in the air. There is a pleasure in sharing the happiness of the trees, mountains and the grass growing in the green fields.
It is morning time. Breakfast has been duly taken. The poet expresses an ardent wish. He wants his sister to leave everything else and come out into the lap of nature. Without any further delay, she should come out and enjoy the warm sunshine. The boy named at Edward will be there with her. She should be quick to put on her woodland dress to wander among the trees. She should bring the books with her. They will spend an idle day in the lap of nature. No serious work will be done.
The poet regrards his sister as his friend. It will be the first day of the living calendar. Every day be full of happiness and joy. This day will mark the beginning of a new year to be spent in the lap of nature. They will find love in every nook and corner of nature. Nature with steal their hearts. The poet's sister will certainly fall in love with nature. There will be love all over the earth. There will be love among human beings. The sister will feel the presence of love everywhere.
A few moments spent in the lap of nature can bring more benefit than years of thinking and reasoning within the four walls of the house. They will enjoy the beauty and sweetness of the season and their hearts will be filled with pleasure. Their hearts will quietly learn to obey the laws and a discipline of nature. A day spent in the lap of nature will lay the foundation of the whole year. It will set the trend of their habit and nature. If the sister loves nature for a day, she will love it for the whole year.
The sister will feel the presence of the divine power in the nature. She will feel it above, below and around her. That the divine power will shape and mold their souls. As a result, Their souls love everyone and everything. So the poet insists that his sister should be quick to put on her woodland dress to wander among the trees. She should bring no book with her. They will spend an idle day in the lap of nature. No serious work will be done. Thus the poet invites his sister to the open lap of nature.
