जीवन में अलग-थलग रहते हुए भी कोई व्यक्ति जब-तब कहीं-कहीं किसी हद तक जुड़ना चाहेगा। दिन के अलग-अलग समय, मौसम, काम-धंधे की दशा आदि में उसे कम से कम एक ऐसी स्नेहिल बाँह की ओर खुलने वाली खिड़की के बगैर बहुत अधिक समय तक नहीं रह सकेगा। कुछ भी न करने की मनःस्थिति के बावजूद वह थके कदमों से खिड़की की ओर बढ़ जाता है और बेमन से कभी लोगों और कभी आसमान की ओर देखने लगता है, उसका सिर धीरे से पीछे की ओर झुक जाता है। इस स्थिति में भी सड़क पर दौड़ते घोड़े, उनकी बग्घियों की खड़खड़ और शोरगुल उसे अपनी ओर खींच लेंगे और अंततः वह जीवन-धारा से जुड़ ही जाएगा।
